De door de bewoners van Warlock als marshal ingehuurde beruchte gunslinger Clay Blaisedell lijkt de juiste man om hun stad te beschermen tegen de voortdurende ordeverstoringen van de outlaws van de San Pablo Ranch, geleid door de psychotische Abe McQuown. Clay neemt zijn omstreden mank lopende vriend en gokker Tom Morgan mee, die in Warlock een saloon overneemt. Clay's populariteit loopt snel terug, wanneer hij weigert mee te werken aan het lynchen van drie gevangen genomen outlaws. Vervolgens wordt de voormalige outlaw Johnny Gannon tot deputy-sheriff benoemd door het burgercomité van Warlock en hij moet zien alle problemen in Warlock op te lossen. Een confrontatie tussen Clay en Johnny lijkt onvermijdelijk, nadat de ex-saloondanseres Lily Dollar, waar Johnny verliefd op is, Clay en Tom beschuldigd van moord op haar verloofde.
