Davis Merrell is een succesvolle regisseur, die al een paar jaar aan filmprojecten buiten Amerika werkt. Hij komt terug op het moment dat senator McCarthy onder andere in Hollywood een heksenjacht op communisten aan het voeren is. Er wordt gezocht naar verraders van het kapitalisme, die zelf het communisme aanbidden. Als hij wordt ondervraagd door een onderhandelaar, vertelt hij hem niks. Daardoor komt hij op een zwarte lijst te staan, zodat hij niet aan het werk kan. Hij staat nu voor de keuze: geen werk of leden van een communisten-organisatie aangeven.
